Why Time on Bikes?

We started Time on Bikes in 2015 to help people get riding by building their skill and confidence at their own pace.

What we noticed around bikes and licensing was a number of people who either bought bikes that didn't suit them (or didn't ride at all) because of the LAMS waiting time for restricted (RE) licence.  The common problems we noticed were:

♦ Buying a small LAMS bike  and desperately wanting something bigger by week 4

♦ Buying a large LAMS bike, and finding it too hard to handle in the first few days of riding

♦ Getting an RE licence, Waiting 12 months (now 2 years!) with no riding, then straight to R class Qride

We also have seen a few financial traps for riders who aren't realistic about their riding needs compared to cost.  The common issues are:

♦ Buying a bike and only riding a few times a year

♦ Not buying a bike, so not even riding a few times a year

♦ Buying a bike and not being satisfied after riding it for a while

♦ Buying a specific purpose bike (tourer or sports bike) not well suited to everyday commuting

What everyone needs is a 'mate's bike' to learn on, try a few different sizes/types, or even borrow when the car breaks down.  So we created Time on Bikes as a sort of 'bike library' where you can hire a bike when you need it, change bikes mid hire, and return it when you don't need it.

Our reasonable rates mean, for most bikes, that hiring our bikes is cheaper than owning and running your own if you ride less than once a month.

Our Motorcycling History

A husband and wife team, we each have riding experiences of our own that shape what we think riders need to ride safely, enjoyably, and cost effectively.

Brooke got his motorcycle licence as a 17 year old school kid back in the 80's - on the same day as his car licence.  He has been a bike nut ever since.  Parking and running costs were a big factor in riding as a Uni student which saw him spend a year on a Honda H100, a year on a Suzuki GSX250 and then a while on the crazy 2 stroke Yamaha RZ350. Many, many bikes later (and about 500,000 kms) he still rides almost every day.

Alison got her RE licence back in the early 90's in her early married years, and rode to work occasionally.  She was more a motorcycle 'associate' until in recent years becoming the family MotoGP expert and historian, and using her R class Qride as a refresher back to riding after a 10 year break having the kids.  Alison has been our test pilot for returning riders gaining confidence in size steps of bikes.
